Gatha Ahunavad – Yasna 31.4

Yadā ashem zevim anghen, mazdāoschā ahurāongho;

Ashichā ārmaiti, vahishtā ishasā mananghā;

Maibyo khshathrem aojonghvat, yehyā veredā vanaemā drujem.

“If Asha is to be invoked, and (also) the Lords of Mazda (i.e. Amesha Spentas), and Ashi and Armaiti; do I seek for my ones O Best Mind, the mighty power, through whose increase we may vanquish the druj.”

 

Farvardin Yasht – Karda IV to X (para 30 to 39)

IV.30. We venerate….the Fravashis…who are good friends and well wishers (hvarezānāo) of long time friends. They are best as companions (upashitee) for those men who do not hurt (anāzaretāo) them. They are good to those who are good. They are un-manifest (gufrāo), far-sighted, givers of health, famous, giving victory in battles, and have never inflicted pain from the beginning.

 

V.31. We venerate….the Fravashis…who are well-determined against tormentors, the best benefactor for those who are superior workers, who are breakers of the powerful hands of the wicked in battles.

 

  1. 32. We venerate….the Fravashis…who are charitable (aredrāo), strong, powerful, beyond thought (anāmāthwāo), givers of happiness, health giving, bringing with them health and blessings as wide as the earth, as long as the river and as high as the sun.

Note: 1. Fravashis are beyond thought, just as Ahura Mazda is a spirit among spirit.

  1. The simile about earth, river and sun are similar to those occurring in Kerfeh Mozd.

 

VII. 33. We venerate….the Fravashis…who are strong, givers of protection, fighters for a good cause (arejyeintish), firm (khravishyantish), far-seeing (urvinaitish). They are the destroyers of the harm of all harmful ones – of demons and of men. They courageously fight opponents as per their will (kāmāicha) and wish (jaoshāicha).

  1. O good (vanghuhi) and beneficent ones (sevishtāo), when you are happier, unoffended, pleased, un-harmed (ainitāo) and uninjured by countries, then you give them (nisrinaot) victory created by Ahura and conquering superiority. You are worthy of worship and worthy of adoration. You move about in space as per your wish.

 

VIII.35. We venerate….the Fravashis…who are famous (frasrutāo), victorious in battles, very courageous, having shield, and determined (amuyamnāo) amongst the righteous. The pursuer (vyāscha) and the pursued (vyānascha) both call them for help, the pursuer to catch and the pursued to out-run.

  1. The Fravashis frequent the places (fraoirisishtāo) where righteous men practice righteousness with devotion (zarazdātem), where they get greatest of respect (freretāo) and where righteous men are respected (freretāo), contented (khshnuto) and satisfied (atbishto). (Same as Karda II, para 25)

 

IX.37. We venerate….the Fravashis…who have many armies, many weapons (yastozyāo), high held banner and brilliant. Wherever strong warriors fight against evil ones (dānu), there in the vigorous fights they go (nijasen) to help the warriors.

  1. You break (taurvayat) the victory of the Turanian evil ones, you break the malice of the Turanian evil ones. It is because of you that brave leaders, brave benefactors and brave victors become (baon) leaders (karshnajo), heroes (hvira) and benefactors (sevishta).

Note: 1. The last sentence is about the destruction brought about by the evil ones (dānu). Kangaji does not give its translation. 2. Here suddenly the tone of address to the Fravasis changes from third person to the second person.

 

X.39. We venerate….the Fravashis…who destroy the two sides (frakarana) of the opponents’ united army (rasmano hāmstātee), and then scatter (vi..nāmayeinti) the middle portion. Thereafter they swiftly go (fravazente) to help righteous persons and punish the wrong-doers.

Note: The last sentence (avanghe narām……duzvarstāvarezām) is from Atash Nyash.

 

THE KAYANIAN DYNASTY

King Kae Khushru – Bizan & Manizeh: (Taken as an entire episode in Feb 2011, Feb 2016 movie)

Bizan was a Pahelvan (knight/paladin) in the court of King KaeKhushru. He was the son of Geev and Banu Goshasp. His grandfathers were Gudarz on father’s side and Rustom on the mother’s side. He.

 

Once, when the King was in court surrounded by ministers and Pahelvans like Geev, Gudarz, Gurgin, Jang-e-Shavran, Roham, Gastaham, Toos, and Bizan, a few distressed farmers from Armani (modern Armenia), a village on the border of Iran and Turan, entered the court with a petition to the king.  They requested the king to save them from thousands of huge wild boars which came into their farms, uprooted huge tree with their tusks and destroyed the crops.

 

The king asked the Pahlvans in his court to go and relieve the farmers’ plight. No senior paladin was willing. However, young Bizan showed readiness. The king instructed Gurgin, a senior paladin, to go with him as a guide. Gurgin was envious of Bizan and misled him into a trap. Bizan landed up in Turan, where Manizeh, the young and beautiful daughter of the Turanian king Afrasiyab fell in love with him. She took him away to her palace in Turan, where Bizan was discovered by the kings guards and imprisoned in a deep dungeon. Manizeh too faithfully followed him, and took care of him.

 

King Kaekhyushru came to know that Bizan was alive. He sent Rustom and Geev to rescue him. They went in disguise to Turan as merchants with 7 other paladins and 100 soldiers.

 

Initially Rustom refused to acknowledge Manizeh. He secretly sent his ring to Bizan in food. Bizan recognized the ring and resent Manizeh. Rustom assured her that he would be coming to rescue Bizan. He went in the night with the paladins, freed Bizan and set out for Iran with Manizeh. Afrasiyab, when he came to know about the daring escape, followed them but was not able to catch up.  In Iran Bizan and Manizeh got married. This story teaches us some very pertinent lessons, like:

  1. Not to easily trust people
  2. Impulsive decisions are often difficult to fulfill
  3. Tough times don’t last, but tough people do.
  4. Truth always has a way of surfacing
  5. True love conquers all and has the power to transform people and work miracles
  6. Justice is finally done
  7. When necessary, to take help from outside when we cannot manage it ourself .
